Heavy rains Saturday forced North Texas Motor Speedway promoter Mark Chewning to postpone the Fourth Annual Longhorn Roundup. Time trials were completed on Thursday night and Steve Kosiski of Omaha, Neb. won Friday night's preliminary feature. The rain forced the Saturday night program and Sunday's finale to be postponed until Saturday and Sunday, March 7th and 8th.
Along with completing the $130,000 race for the I.M.C.A. type modifieds. the I.M.C.A sprint cars will finish their $2,500 to win race on Saturday night. 260 drivers from 21 states participated in the race on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with most expected to return in two weeks.
Along with Kosiski, the five qualified drivers for the $30,000 to win finale are Jimmy Owens, Newport, Tenn., who finished second in Friday's feature. Former NTMS I.M.C.A. modified champion Jerry Little, Greenville, Texas, claimed third place, easily ahead of Kelly Shryock of Story City, Iowa. Shryock started tenth in the 26 car field. Rounding out the top five and claiming a spot in the main event was Ronnie Gould of Calera, Okla.
The sixth through tenth place cars in Friday night's feature have a starting spot set in the Sunday March 8th B main, though they may elect to race Saturday to possibly improve their starting position. Sixth at the checkered flag was David Smith of McKinney, Texas, followed by Jim Burford, Keatchie, La., Klint Pursley, Locust Grove, Okla., Mark Noble, Blooming Prairie, Minn. and Stephen Muilenburg of Sparta, Mo. Noble finished second in the 1996 Longhorn Roundup. He started Friday night's feature 22nd, passing 13 cars on his way to a ninth place finish.
The Longhorn Roundup resumes Saturday March 7th with the pit gates opening at 2 p.m., races start at 6:30. The modified feature race Saturday night pays $1,000 to the winner. Five more cars will qualify for Sunday's 50-lap feature on Saturday. Sunday the gates open at noon, with the last round of heat races starting at 2:00, leading up to the $30,000 to win main event. The sprint cars will race for $2,500 to win Saturday.
General admission for adults will be $10.00 Saturday night and $15.00 on Sunday. Children ages 7 thru 11 are always $3.00, and kids 6 and under get in free. Pit Passes will be $25.00 on Saturday and $30.00 on Sunday.
