Zimmerman and Brassfield Win at
North Texas Longhorn Roundup

Royse City, TX (Feb 19) - Dennis Zimmerman of Seagoville, Tex. and Shawn Brassfield of Ada, Okla. captured preliminary features at North Texas Motor Speedway Saturday night in the 6th Annual Longhorn Roundup. The drivers earned outside front row starting positions for Sunday's $15,000 to win twin races. The Longhorn Roundup is the richest race in the nation for the IMCA type modified race cars, paying a total of over $130,000. Also Saturday night, Jeff Day, Greenville, Tex. claimed the $1,500 first prize in the IMCA Sprint Car feature.

The 2000 edition of the Longhorn Roundup provides two complete, but separate race programs. Drivers were divided into two groups based upon their heat race lineup on Friday night. Drivers who raced in odd numbered heats race together all weekend, as do drivers who raced in even numbered heats.

Zimmerman won his heat race and then drew the second lowest number of the 11 heat race winners in his portion of the program to start the 30-lap preliminary feature on the outside front row. Alongside when the green flag dropped was Ronnie Sigman of Dallas. The two drive team cars sponsored by City Motor Supply / Loden's Racing Engines and Enduro Powder Coating. The team is owned by Dennis' father, James.

The fast dry track helped Zimmerman hold off Sigman's challenge in the first half of the opening lap. He was then able to pull ahead of his teammate. Two cautions for multi-car spins slowed the opening laps, but when the green flew on lap four, the race ran non-stop to the finish. Zimmerman and Sigman battled several times for the top spot, but Dennis was always to hold the position. Sigman was able to pull alongside occasionally, but his car could not get enough traction off the bottom of the turns to take the lead. Sigman actually ran better in the middle of the track in his heat race, but could not find a faster groove in the 30-lap main. Klint Pursley, Locust Grove, Okla. ran a strong third the entire race, with fourth starting Davie Murray, Oberlin, Kan. taking that spot. Rounding out the top five, and claiming the last guaranteed starting spot for Sunday's feature was Ron Jones, of Zimmerman, Minn. He started eleventh. The sixth through tenth place drivers qualified for spots on the outside first five rows of Sunday's first B main. In those spots were John Anderson, Omaha, Neb., Gene Boyter, Bossier City, La., Gary Jellison, Topeka, Kan., Justin Boney, DeSoto, Kan. and Kenny Holdridge, Muskogee, Okla.

In the other half of the program, Brassfield also topped his heat race, but started the feature on the outside of the second row. John Stenhouse, Longview, Tex. led the opening laps, but Brassfield quickly moved out front by the third lap. The race got exciting early as Buck Trull, Linden, Tenn. challenged Brassfield for the lead. Staying out front in his Urethane Solutions/ Martin Racing Chassis Nr. 491, Brassfield was able to fend off the challenge and pull away to a small lead. After an eighth lap caution, Brassfield opened a comfortable lead while the battle raged behind him. Trull began to have trouble late in the race when smoke started to come out of the right side of his engine. By that time, Walt Butler, Bald Knob, Ark., had moved up from the fourth row to challenge for second. As Trull faltered, Butler claimed the runner-up spot. The race slowed just three laps from the finish. On the restart Brassfield pulled away. Trull's did not come up to speed, allowing Butler to claim second. Tim Donlinger, Rochester, Minn., also came from the fourth row, and took third. Trull's car slipped in turn four as the white flag flew, letting several cars past. One of those, Kelly Shryock, Story City, Iowa, also slipped in the fourth turn as the checkered flag waved. Charlie Armstrong, Alexander, Ark., took fourth, with Jason Wilkey, San Angelo, Tex. fifth. Those drivers will lineup on the outside first five rows for Sunday's $15,000 to win second feature. Claiming spots in the B main with a sixth to tenth place finish were Trull, Brad Waits, West Concord, Minn., Shryock, Randy Zimmerman, Fort Scott, Kan. and Kevin Stoa, Kasson, Minn.

In the IMCA sprint car portion of the program, a couple of newer drivers showed the level of competition will be turned up a notch this season. Jeff Day moved up from street stocks five years ago when the IMCA sprints first ran at NTMS. He became a very strong driver very quickly, winning a feature in his first month of sprint car racing. Starting alongside Day on the front row for the 25-lap feature was Eric Winnett, Fort Worth, Tex., who also moved from street stocks to sprint cars with the past few seasons. The experience of four full seasons of racing on the NTMS oval was the key to Day's victory. After a couple early spins and cautions, Winnett took the lead and raced on the bottom of the track as the race settled down. Day stayed very close, but did not abuse his tires as the race progressed. When the leaders caught lapped traffic, Day positioned himself right on Winnett's rear bumper. Trying to gain speed to pass the cars at the back of the pack, Winnett powered too strongly off the second turn on lap 14 and slipped off the edge of the back straight. That gave Day the only opportunity he needed to take the lead and pull away. Day quickly put lapped cars between himself and the battle for the runner-up spot. Winnett lost the position in heavy traffic for a few laps when Kevin Ramey, Fort Worth, Tex. and Brad Welborn, Princeton, Tex. each got past. However, Winnett was able to return the favor on the 20th lap to retake second place. Ramey fell back a couple spots on the next lap, but was able to retake third as the white flag fell. Welborn was fourth with Dennis Welch fifth. Wayne Johnson, Oklahoma City, Okla., made the best run of the night, charging from 13th to finish in sixth place.

Sunday the gates open at noon, with races starting at three. There will be two full programs leading up to two identical $15,000 to win features for the IMCA modifieds.
