Royse City, TX (Feb 19) - Tim Donlinger, Rochester, Minn. took a giant step at becoming the first driver to win two Longhorn Roundups at North Texas Motor Speedway with his qualifying feature victory Friday night. The 1996 champion led all 25-laps of the feature to earn the outside front row starting spot for Sunday's $30,000 to win main event.

Donlinger took his win in the Dirt Doctor Racing, Elcor Construction Nr. 36 by a car length over a charging Jimmy Owens, from Newport, Tenn. Starting on the last row of the 24 car field, Owens passed 21 cars on his way to a second place finish.

Owens flew to the front on the outside of the track. He dove deeper into the corners than any other car and pulled past car after car as the race progressed. Bo Rawdon, Kennedale, Tex. took second place on the sixth lap, and stayed with Donlinger to the checkered flag. Rawdon's team car, the Nr. 118 of George White, Fort Worth, Tex., pulled along side Rawdon a few times, but both cars were setup to run on the bottom of the track. Neither had an advantage over the other, so Rawdon held the runner-up spot for most of the race.

Rawdon made a few attempts to pull even with Donlinger, but could not risk losing a guaranteed starting spot in Sunday's feature. Owens transferred from the B main, where he started 13th and finished sixth. He had nothing to loose as he moved up.

The action was often three and four cars wide in the battle to make the top ten. Owens put his Nr. 20 in the top ten on the 14th lap. The top five cars start on the outside of the first five rows Sunday in the A feature. The sixth through tenth place cars start on the outside first five rows of Sunday's B main.

Taking the final transfer spot to Sunday's feature behind Rawdon and White was Mike Sorenson of Rochester, Minn. Texas late model ace Doug Ingalls of Longview was sixth, followed by Grand Prairie, Tex.'s Troy Taylor, a former late model champion at North Texas Motor Speedway. Mark Noble, Blooming Prairie, Minn., was the runner up to Donlinger in 1996. He came from the B main, starting on the inside of the 11th row. He came up through the pack with Owens to finish eighth. Corey Dripps, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Randy Frailey, Chouteau, Okla. rounded out the top ten.

Over 170 cars lined up to race Thursday, and the cars will attempt to qualify for the outside first five rows for Sunday's feature on Friday night.

Saturday will be a special event for the racers and fans, the make-up of last year's Longhorn Roundup final day. Qualified to start on the front row of the make-up $30,000 to win feature Saturday are Steve Kosiski, Omaha, Neb., and John Logue, Boone, Iowa. Ten drivers are set in that race, with ten more to qualify Saturday.

Saturday and Sunday afternoon general admission will be $15.00 with races starting at 3 pm each day. Children ages 7 thru 11 are always $3.00, and kids 6 and under get in free. Pit Passes will be $25.00 Friday night and $35.00 on Saturday and Sunday.
