Sean Jones Claims Longhorn Roundup Pole
at North Texas

Royse City, TX (Feb 18) - Sean Jones of Irving won Thursday night's qualifying feature in the Fifth Annual Longhorn Roundup at North Texas Motor Speedway, but he won a prize greater than $1,000 - the pole position for Sunday's $30,000 to win main event.

On a dry track under a very stiff north wind, 12th heat race. Of the 17 heat race winners, Jones drew the top pill to start on the pole position for the 25-lap qualifying feature. Jones took the lead on the start and never looked back. He pulled away steadily and took the victory by almost a quarter lap. Jones had no difficulty keeping his U.S. Door, Business Equipment Exchange No. 5 out front to the checkered flag.

The battle of the A feature was for second place on the race track. Don Pierson of Seagoville, Tex. has been racing modifieds for just a few years in the local area. Wayne Brooks of Bald Knob, Ark. races in major events across the country. Pierson took second on the start with Brooks right behind him. For the entire 25-lap distance the pair battled for position. Brooks managed to drive deeper into the corners than Pierson, especially in turn one, but Pierson's car maintained its speed through the middle of the turn allowing him to pull inches ahead of Brooks in each corner. Pierson kept the position to start on the inside of the second row for Sunday in his Staff Graphic Designs, Diamond D Racing No. 76. Brooks will start the #0 on the inside of the third row, with Jeep Vanwormer of Pinconning, Mich. In the #550 qualifying for the inside of the fourth row. Bob Sagen of Arthur, N.D. earned the final transfer spot for Sunday's A feature in the #99.

Finishing sixth through tenth were Paul White, Temple, Tex., Mike Trigg, Odessa, Tex., Mike Bowers, North Little Rock, Ark., Brian Strand, Bemidji, Minn. who started 22nd and Mark Kurth of Gaylord, Mich. They earned the inside starting spots in the first five rows of Sunday's B Main.

John Anderson, of Omaha, Neb., led every lap of the B Main, with Paul Dutton, Wichita, Kan., second. Johnny Bone, Jr., Pea Ridge, Ark., won the C Main ahead of Mike Sorenson of Rochester, Minn.

Over 170 cars lined up to race Thursday, and the cars will attempt to qualify for the outside first five rows for Sunday's feature on Friday night.

Saturday will be a special event for the racers and fans, the make-up of last year's Longhorn Roundup final day. Qualified to start on the front row of the make-up $30,000 to win feature Saturday are Steve Kosiski, Omaha, Neb., and John Logue, Boone, Iowa. Ten drivers are set in that race, with ten more to qualify Saturday.

General admission for adults will be $10.00 Friday's qualification night with races starting at 6:30 pm. Saturday and Sunday afternoon general admission will be $15.00 with races starting at 3 pm each day. Children ages 7 thru 11 are always $3.00, and kids 6 and under get in free. Pit Passes will be $25.00 Friday night and $35.00 on Saturday and Sunday.
